#plasticfreejuly Day 11

Day 11: Break Up with Fast Fashion

Did you know that landfills receive 10.5 million tons of textile waste in 2015?*

Only about 15% (about 2.5 million tons) actually gets recycled.

My suggestion to you would be to shop second hand first. I always search thrift stores first before purchasing new. I would say that my daughter's and I's wardrobe is 95% thrift-ed. There are a few exceptions like undergarments and socks.

Many times you can find new and name brand items. The stores that I frequent the most also give back to the community. So I try to shop there first and then work my way out to the corporate type thrift store. Do a local search and see if the animal shelter, family crisis center, or church have stores near you. I stay away from "curated" type thrift stores. Most of the time these places are overpriced.

When you're ready to Marie Kondo the heck out of your closet think to donate/recycling first before trashing.
